Join the Celebration: 160 Years of the Yetholm Border Shepherds’ Show
Yetholm Border Shepherds’ Show Celebrates 160 Years of Rural Tradition This Saturday
This weekend, the Yetholm Border Shepherds Show proudly celebrates its 160th year. First held in the 1840s, the Show has long been a highlight of the rural calendar, bringing together farmers, shepherds, and the wider community to honour the region’s agricultural roots.
Founded by local shepherds to showcase their finest livestock and enjoy a rare social gathering, the Show has grown steadily over the decades. In its early years, Cheviot and Leicester sheep dominated the pens, with Halfbreds introduced around 1873 and Blackfaces by 1900. Collie dogs and Shorthorn cattle were also proudly exhibited from the outset.
The Industrial Section was introduced in the early 1900s, adding a new dimension to the event. Originally featuring vegetables such as turnips and cabbages, along with rolled butter, eggs and jams, it reflected the broader skills and produce of rural life. Over time, the Show has continued to evolve, welcoming new breeds of sheep and expanding its programme. Since the 1990s, main ring entertainment has become a central feature, drawing in families and visitors from across the region.
